Hawthorne Valley Farm is ultimately comprised of the land we steward, the animals we care for, the customers and program participants that we serve, and the people who work here. Each person is integral and brings his or her own insights, creativity, and experience to our operations.
Steffen Schneider ~ Director of Farm Operations
Steffen finished his agricultural university studies in Giessen, Germany in 1982. He has been a Biodynamic practitioner since 1983, first in Wisconsin and, since 1989, at Hawthorne Valley Farm. He especially loves working with the livestock and the dairy cows and his passion for Biodynamics continues to grow. He has given workshops at numerous conferences and also teaches at the Biodynamic Course at the Pfeiffer Center in Spring Valley, New York. Bob Bower ~ Corner Garden Manager
Prior to joining Hawthorne Valley Farm in late 2010, Bob worked for over 15 years at Angelic Organics, a northern Illinois, 1,500-member, Biodynamic CSA with 30 acres in vegetable production each year. At Angelic Organics, Bob was both the General Manager and the Growing Manager. Additionally, since 1995, Bob managed efforts in Customer Service, Distribution, Finance, Marketing, and more. Bob is the father of three adult sons, is learning how to keep honeybees, and enjoys studying Anthroposophy and Biodynamics. Email Bob.
Spencer Fenniman ~ Field Crop & Compost Manager
Spencer manages forage, compost, and grain production at Hawthorne Valley Farm. He also ensures all of our equipment is up and running smoothly. Spencer has farmed in Montana, Maine, and Oregon. In 2012, he and his wife, Jill, relocated from Winter Green Farm in Noti, Oregon to Hawthorne Valley. At Winter Green, a 300-acre Biodynamic Farm, Spencer managed the grass-fed beef herd, the compost operation, and the vegetable CSA. Spencer enjoys skiing and fly-fishing. Email Spencer.
Lucy Marston ~ Field Vegetable & CSA Manager
Lucy started at Hawthorne Valley Farm as a Whole Farm Apprentice in 2011 then stayed on as the Advanced Vegetable Apprentice in 2012. She continues her work with the field vegetable CSA by stepping up as the manager for the 2013 season. Andrew Whitby ~ Herdsman
Andrew is the dairy herdsman at Hawthorne Valley Farm, where he enjoys life with his wife and three daughters. Prior to moving to Hawthorne Valley, he worked for several years at Seven Stars Farm in Kimberton, Pennsylvania as a general farm hand and milker. In 2008, he attended the part-time Biodynamics training at the Pfeiffer Center in Spring Valley, New York. His previous profession as a carpenter equipped him with a wide variety of skills, which daily prove useful as a farmer. During his childhood, Andrew spent a great deal of time on the Biodynamic farms of Sussex, England where he developed his original interest in and love of farm life. Email Andrew.
Andreas Schneider ~ Director of Farm Production Enterprises
Andreas earned his Masters of Business Administration from George Washington University, in Washington D.C. During his time as a student, he and two classmates founded Capital Kombucha, the District’s first local kombucha brewery. After two years of operation, Capital Kombucha has become a recognized brand carried by over 100 stores between Northern Virginia and Philadelphia, including Whole Foods, MOMs Organic Markets, Sweetgreen, and Dean&Deluca. Prior to starting Capital Kombucha, Andreas spent three years as a management consultant focused exclusively on helping large family-run enterprises manage generational succession. Email Andreas.

Tim Merante ~ Head Cheesemaker
Tim returns to Hawthorne Valley Farm, where he began his cheesemaking career in 2005. After 5 years here, he left to join Milk Thistle Farm, where as production manager he was responsible for creating glass-bottled milk and yogurt. But it wasn’t long before his hands craved the familiar fell of curds and whey, so in 2010 Tim joined The Creamery at Twin Maple Farm, and became head cheesemaker there in 2011, creating their award-winning Hudson Red. Tim was born and raised in the Hudson Valley, where he got his first taste of milk straight from the cow at the age of 8.
Zachary Tattersall-Hill ~ Greenmarket Manager
Until 2010, Zachary lived in Breckenridge, Colorado and worked at a quaint Italian Restaurant called Giampietros. As Chef and General Manager of the restaurant, he realized his passion for good food and sought to get closer to its source. He moved to Columbia County at the end of 2010 to become the Head Buyer at our Farm Store, and has since developed relationships with local producers and artisans. Zachary continues his travels regionally in his VW Vanagon, visiting farms and producers to learn more about sustainable food culture and to find new purveyors. Email Zach.

Jeremy Laurange ~ Store Manager
Jeremy has been working at the Farm Store for nearly 14 years. He started as a granola baker while studying art at Columbia Greene Community College before taking on a full time position as POS Administrator. After taking on various management roles within the Store, Jeremy was promoted to Store Manager in the Fall of ‘15. Jeremy is a life-long Columbia County resident and currently lives in Chatham with his wife. In his spare time, he likes to take on creative endeavors and explore all the biking and hiking trails in the area. Email Jeremy.

Ryan has been an avid farmer since the early-90’s and co-owns Flower and Heart Farm with his wife Amelia. He studied community development and social change in college and lived and worked on a farm in Olympia, Washington. He is a minister at the Universal Life Church and a volunteer firefighter in his local community.
Tommy Carlucci ~ Chef, Kitchen Manager
Tommy grew up in a lower Manhattan luncheonette and has been cooking all of his life. He sold his 18-year old catering company in October 2010 to join the team at Hawthorne Valley where he follows his father’s style and enjoys working with people who act like family. He studies and teaches Tae Kwon Do.

Bonnie first came to work at Hawthorne Valley as the School receptionist in 1998. She then served as a Kindergarten Assistant for many years. Bonnie left to pursue other interests, returning in 2008 to manage the Wellness department at the Farm Store. When not at the Store, Bonnie can be found following her passion for everything herbal. Rachel Schneider ~ Director
Rachel Schneider is a trained Waldorf teacher and farm based educator. She has had extensive experience working with children and adults in both traditional and farm based settings. In her 20 years at Hawthorne Valley Farm, Rachel initiated and developed the farm’s CSA program as well as serving as one of the growers for the HVF market garden. In 2008, she combined her passion for education with her commitment to agriculture and started the Farm Learning Center which provides professional training for beginning farmers as well as farm based experiences for the general public. Indigo Ocean ~ Program Manager
With a long history in both the arts and special education, Indigo’s path ultimately turned towards Waldorf education. She served on the Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School faculty for many years, receiving her Waldorf teacher training certification from Hawthorne Valley Alkion Center. She is now able to combine all of her passions for art, education, farming, and food in her role at the Farm Learning Center. Email Indigo.

Helen Enright ~ Business Manager
Helen is responsible for all the functions of a very busy office environment and has been with the program since 1999. She enjoys scheduling the class visits with the teachers, talking with parents about all the programs offered, and organizing outreach programs for the many supporters and friends of the VSP. As a Business Manager of the program, she is involved with the financial oversight, billing process, and the maintenance of camper records. Hearing the laughter of children as they rush by her window with farm animals is one of the perks of her job. Email Helen.
