THIS IS OUR WORKING DRAFTS PAGE - COMMENTS AND INPUT WELCOME. This page provides links to seven documents or sets of files: 1)Soils/Plant Correlations on 19 Columbia County NY Tomato-growing Farms - a Powerpoint presentation that needs a catchier title. This powerpoint presentation explores data collected during the summer of 2010 on 19 farms in Columbia County. Please refer to the second slide of the presentation for a description of our various goals with this work. To a large degree, this work was meant as a first, descriptive exploration of soil, plant condition, and invertebrates on county vegetable farms, rather than as a test of an explicit hypothesis. ***Apparent glitch in slide 78 has now been corrected. 8 Feb. 2011***
This
was a temporary posting meant mainly for participants in the study. If
you're looking for this powerpoint, please don't hesitate to email me.
2) Ecology in the Field of Time - a draft paper on the interaction of agricultural history and natural history in Columbia County intended for a November conference on Hudson Valley land use. The draft is put here to allow its review by friends and colleagues. This is very much a draft - formatting is incomplete, there is no literature cited section yet, there are periodic notes (mainly in green) indicating where we plan to insert more plant info. It will need a few more proof reads. However, the 'shape' of the paper is there, and, before devoting much more time to polishing, I would much appreciate comments on contents. I'm posting two formats a pdf version and a Word version (for those of you who might want to insert comments into the document). Thank you for your time. Word
Version (8.6 MB)
PDF Version (6.9 MB) Draft Updated 30 Nov. 09 3) In Our Own Image: People and
Nature in Columbia County NY,
a manuscript looking at the intersection of ecology and the public
perception of nature in Columbia County. Again, comments, corrections,
etc are welcome and needed.
PDF
Version (71 MB)
4) Powerpoint on Agroecology Research by Farmscape,
a very initial look at some data and thoughts relating to agroecology
and related themes on county farms. Broken into consideration of soil
use sustainability, the landscape context of beneficial insects, and
farmscape-scale nutrient flows.
PDF Version (6.7 MB)
5) Three maps of a 9 mile2 area more or less centered on the Lindenwald Mansion in Kinderhook and portraying general landscape change in this region since the late 1800s. ZIP File (22 MB) 6) Human Nature: People and the Land in Columbia County, NY. A
working draft of a six-chapter book exploring human and natural history
in the County. This book is planned for publication in 2012 and this
draft will form the basis of a series of readings and discussions
during the winter of 2011/2012 as we garner ideas and comments. Please
read caveats above Table of Contents on page 2.
