Gillibrand, Schumer Announce HVA USDA Award

Ghent, NY—U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand recently announced $693,918 in federal funding from the USDA for Hawthorne Valley Association in support of farmer training.

This grant will Hawthorne Valley’s Place Based Learning Center to build on its six-year track record of offering quality training to beginning farmers in the Hudson Valley and Metropolitan New York. HVA will work in collaboration with Grow NYC, the Bard Prison Initiative, SoulFire Farm, and Black Urban Growers to bring programming to minority, incarcerated, and veteran communities in the next three years.

“The training pipeline through Hawthorne Valley Association allows learning opportunities for aspiring and current farmers to build on or start their operations. This investment for the Capital Region and Hudson Valley helps build on the critical role New York agriculture continues to play in the development and growth of the state’s economy,” said Senator Gillibrand, the first New York Senator to serve on the Senate Agriculture Committee in nearly 40 years.
