Hawthorne Valley Supports Ghent Food Pantry
Hawthorne Valley Farm Store Manager Dana Wagner and Office Manager Jeremy Laurange presented a check for $500 to Ghent Food Pantry Co-Directors Linda Reed and Pat Palmatier on November 25 for its annual donation to the food pantry. That morning, an abundance of canned goods and other food items were delivered to the food pantry, the results of a school-wide food drive at Hawthorne Valley Waldorf School.
“Hawthorne Valley is committed to supporting the Ghent Food Pantry,” Wagner said. “Everyone who works and attends school here believes in the importance of supporting the community we live and work in. The large, national organizations get a lot of press and support, but there are people in need everywhere, and it’s nice to be able to touch people in your own community, especially those who are struggling to feed their families.”
Ghent Food Pantry co-director Linda Reed said that the volunteer-run organization provided Thanksgiving meals to a record number of 138 local families this Thanksgiving, including twenty with 6 or more people in the family. She is grateful for all of this season’s support from the community. In addition to the donations from Hawthorne Valley, the food pantry received financial support from many individuals, as well as the Retired Teachers Association of Chatham who provided funds to purchase pies. Stairns Farm Stand donated potatoes, and local churches collected vegetables from area farmer’s markets so families would have fresh produce for their Thanksgiving meals. Reed pointed out that families need help throughout the year, and the food pantry gratefully accepts donations all year. To make a donation, contact Ghent Town Hall at 518-392-4644. The food pantry is open Monday through Thursday from 9 am to noon.
