Head Buyer for Farm Store

Direct responsibility for: ordering, replenishing, and merchandising all grocery and non-food products; maximizing sales potential through effective and proper procedures for stocking product; sales promotions and meeting margin and sales targets; controlling shrinkage/spoilage; achieve turn goals; participating in physical inventories; and maintaining attractive displays.

The Head buyer will continually keep abreast of market trends, local competition, competitive pricing, evaluate customer requests, manage discontinuance of items, maintain quality standards, process invoices and returns, and ensure an assortment variety and source product that represent the mission of the Farm Store.


Baker Position

HAWTHORNE VALLEY FARM BAKERY is looking for a full-time experienced Baker to join its expanding operations. Our bakery, founded in 1980, produces a diverse line of certified organic artisan yeasted and sourdough breads and assorted pastries. We mill organic and biodynamic flours daily on premise to produce hand-formed loaves and baked goods.

The Baker works in conjunction with the Bakery Production Supervisor and our team of bakers to produce and develop high quality breads. Ideal candidates will have a minimum of five years of professional baking experience and a culinary degree in Baking and Pastry Arts.

The Baker should have a thorough knowledge of pre-ferments and sourdoughs and be skilled in the mixing, kneading, and hand-crafting of traditional breads and pastries. This person should be knowledgeable about all aspects of high volume production, including baking times and temperatures of a variety of baked goods, materials, and techniques used in volume production, food sanitation principles, and methods of maintaining such standards and experience in operating sophisticated bakery equipment. Knowledge of organic certification and bread production a plus.

The Baker should have strong communication and organizational skills. The Baker must also have the ability to work manually in a production bakery and the ability to lift 50 pounds and stand for an 8-hour shift and be able to meet flexible hours/shifts according to production needs.

Our bakery is part of Hawthorne Valley Farm, a 400 acre farm located in the Hudson Valley of New York. The Farm includes a 60-cow dairy herd, a 12-acre market garden, full-line natural foods store, on-site dairy processing plant, kraut cellar and CSA program. Our Bakery sells its product line at its stand at New York City's renowned Union Square Green Market, our Farm Store, and through other regional markets. Our bakery is located in Harlemville, NY about 35 miles southeast of Albany, 20 minutes from Hudson, New York; 20 minutes from the Southern Berkshires of Massachusetts; 2.5 hours from New York City.
